Our philosophy: tradition and selection
Breeding specializing in Italian working guard dogs
[Translate to English:] Cucciolo di Pastore Maremmano e Cavallo
For over ten years, Il Pastore Transumante has been a benchmark in the study, selection, and breeding of Italian livestock guarding dogs, with specific expertise gained in the field and in real-world breeding settings. Our work focuses specifically on two breeds that are iconic of the Italian pastoral tradition: the Maremma Sheepdog and the Sila Sheepdog, livestock guarding dogs bred over centuries to cope with predation and outdoor living.
Our business stems from the concrete need to offer effective, balanced, and functional livestock guarding dogs, capable of working in the presence of large carnivores such as wolves, integrating naturally with flocks, herds, and other farmed animals.
Functional selection and respect for the history of the breeds
Our primary goal is to preserve the authentic characteristics of these breeds, the fruit of a millennia-long history of working alongside humans. Every selection decision is aimed at maintaining a true balance between:
- morphological typicality, in compliance with breed standards;
- Aptitude for work, an essential element for a true livestock guardian dog;
- Physical strength and health, essential for operating in challenging environments;
- Stabilizing character, essential for proper livestock management.
We do not breed dogs exclusively for show or companionship: our dogs are born and raised with a specific purpose: to protect the territory and the animals entrusted to their care.
Ethical breeding: function before aesthetics
At Pastore Transumante, we do not breed for fashion or purely aesthetic reasons. Our mission is to safeguard the original function of the livestock guardian dog, countering the progressive loss of instinct, autonomy, and decision-making ability that often affects breeds bred solely for appearance.
We believe that a true livestock guardian dog must possess:
- Emotional balance and confidence;
- Strength and physical endurance;
- Independence and ability to evaluate;
- Protective instincts toward livestock, never aggressive but firm and determined.
Livestock Guard Dogs for Sustainable Livestock
Through careful and consistent selection, we breed Italian livestock guard dogs ready for work, suitable for sheep, goat, and cattle farms, and multifunctional farms. Our dogs represent a concrete and sustainable solution to predation, recognized by public bodies and prevention programs.
Choosing Il Pastore Transumante means choosing a kennel that focuses on functionality, tradition, and respect for breeds, contributing to the protection of Italy's canine heritage and the coexistence of livestock and wildlife.
A journey spanning millennia
From wolf to working dog
The domestic dog (Canis familiaris) descends from the gray wolf (Canis lupus), and its evolution is inextricably linked to human history. This cooperative coevolutionary relationship dates back approximately 140,000 years, when the first human groups began domesticating wolves. Over time, natural and human selection have shaped the dog, making it an irreplaceable ally: first as a hunter, then as a guardian and protector of flocks.
With the sedentary nature of humankind, the dog found a new role in settlements, becoming a sentinel, helper, and protector. Since then, humans have selected breeds for specific functions, creating a bond that is not only utilitarian, but also mutualistic and identity-building.
Why respecting the original function is essential
The psychological and physical well-being of a working dog depends on the ability to express its natural aptitude. Breeding solely based on aesthetic criteria means betraying millennia of functional selection.
The risk? Losing the qualities that make these breeds efficient, balanced, and healthy, in favor of purely ornamental characteristics.
This is why at our kennel:
We don't just select for morphological beauty, but also evaluate temperament, balance, and guarding ability.
We breed dogs in a real agricultural-pastoral environment, their natural testing ground, because a guard dog cannot develop its skills in artificial environments.
Our Selection Method
The Pastore Transumante has an ambitious goal: to preserve the original qualities of Italian guarding breeds through a modern and scientific approach.
Our Principles:
- Responsible genetic selection to reduce the risk of temperamental and genetic problems.
- Early imprinting with livestock (sheep, goats, camelids) to develop a natural guarding ability.
- Balanced socialization to ensure reliable, confident, and non-aggressive dogs.
- Natural breeding environment: Our dogs are raised in open spaces, in contact with flocks and animals, not in kennels or urban settings.
Each dog is the result of a constant interaction between genetics and environment: this is why our facility is designed to reproduce the ideal conditions for raising a true working dog.
An international benchmark for Sila Sheepdog selection
We are now the largest professional selection center in the world for the Sila Sheepdog. Our dogs have been exported to the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Poland, France, Spain, Serbia, Russia, Ukraine, Japan, the USA, Mexico, and Uruguay, contributing to the spread and promotion of this rare and precious breed.
Our commitment is clear:
- Preserve the natural qualities that history has handed down to us.
- Avoid aesthetic tendencies that distort the dog's function.
- Ensure healthy, balanced, and reliable dogs for work and animal welfare.
Because breeding isn't about producing puppies, but about preserving a thousand-year history of collaboration between man and dog.
